Game Commission appointee OK'd

The state Senate has confirmed Gov. Tom Wolf’s appointee to a position on the Game Commission board of directors that was vacated by a Butler County resident.

Kristen Schnepp-Giger, of Warren and a wildlife biologist for the National Wild Turkey Federation since 2011, was confirmed to fill the District 1 position that James Daley of Cranberry Township resigned from in April. The district includes Butler, Clarion, Crawford, Erie, Lawrence, Mercer, Venango and Warren counties.

Schnepp-Giger, a hunter, widow and mother of two, also has a cooperative position with the Allegheny National Forest overseeing stewardship and challenge-cost-share funds to implement more than $1.6 million in wildlife habitat enhancement work in the forest, according to the commission.

She is replacing Daley, who resigned over the commission’s decision to move the opening day of this year’s rifle deer season to Saturday. Opening day of the rifle season had been held the Monday after Thanksgiving. Daley said the commission approved the change even though most of the comments submitted to its website opposed the move.
