Harmony to buy flashing lights for Route 68 crossing

HARMONY — Pedestrians crossing Route 68 soon may have flashing lights to alert oncoming drivers to the crosswalk.

Borough Council on Tuesday night approved the purchase of up to $4,000 for LEDs, poles and signs that will ensure oncoming motorists are aware of the crosswalk at the junction of Pittsburgh Street and Route 68.

Because the poles will abut a state road, Frank Gannon, director of operations, they will need permission from PennDOT before they can be erected.

Originally, council members inquired about putting lights at that crosswalk that would activate when a pedestrian pushes a button, but Gannon said he had asked about the price of that and was told it would be approximately $20,000.
