Officer-involved shooting updated
State police issued an update Tuesday regarding last week’s officer-involved shooting in Lawrence County.
State police from the New Castle barracks continue their investigation into the shooting of Juan Carter Hernandez, 33, of Campbell, Ohio, who was shot and killed by an officer who found him allegedly beating Chynna Cardena, 24.
Police said Cardena died from injuries suffered after being beaten with a blunt object.
“Investigators have determined that Cardena and Hernandez knew each other, and it does not appear that her killing was motivated by hate or bias,” police said.
Cardena, who identified as a transgender woman, moved to New Wilmington from Springdale, Ark., last year.
The Pennsylvania State Police Heritage Affairs Section is assisting with community outreach. Members of the program work with state police and local departments to ensure hate crimes are investigated thoroughly and charges are filed appropriately.
They also work proactively to enhance the department’s relationship with historically undeserved communities.
