A-C Valley Do Something Good Club donates to veterans

FOXBURG — For the past 10 years, students in the Do Something Good Club at Allegheny-Clarion Valley School District have been collecting items to assemble into care packages to send to veterans.

“Do Something Good Club is always looking for ways to give back to our little community, but this project allows us to reach beyond the school district and recognize our servicemen and women to let them know that we are thinking of them and thankful for their dedication,” said Peggy Plowman, club adviser and learning support teacher.

This year, items will be collected throughout the school district through Friday. Care packages will be assembled and sent out next week.

Items donated by students and their families include socks, washcloths, drink mixes for water, Band-Aids, notebooks, pencils and other small nonperishable, which are bagged up and sent to an address provided by a local recruiter.

Plowman says that the destinations for the items change from year to year so they can reach servicemen and women from a variety of areas across the United States.

“We benefit in many ways by collecting donations,” said Adison Painter, club president and senior. “We take great pride in giving to those in the military as we honor their service. They benefit from our donations, and we know we are doing something good, which is the purpose of our club. It is a good way to earn points toward a Turkey Bowl win too!”

Each year students at A-C Valley participate in the Turkey Bowl, which takes place the day before Thanksgiving break. At this event, grade levels compete against each other to have their grade level added to the Turkey Bowl plaque. One way students earn points for this event is to donate items by grade levels.

Tracy Hartle, also an adviser for the club and a learning support teacher said, “We look for ways to support local communities throughout the year, but this is one of our favorite activities for club members. They don’t know who will receive the packages, but they know they have certainly done something good for those who have given of themselves to protect us.”
