Technology event returns

Symposium set for May 22

BUTLER TWP — Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, the Technology Symposium will return May 22 at Butler County Community College.

It will showcase emerging technologies and how they impact businesses. Discussions also will look at ways organizations can attract more young people to technology careers.

The Tri-County Technology Consortium, the Butler County Chamber of Commerce, Future POS and BC3 are teaming up to present the half-day seminar to raise technology awareness for businesses, educators and others.

The symposium will be in Founders Hall from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Registration is at 7:30 a.m., with breakfast at 8 a.m. Lunch at 12:30 p.m. also will be provided.

Registration for individuals is $35, and vendor registration for the mini business expo is $100.

John and Kelly Giles, owners of point-of-sale software firm Future POS of Center Township, will kick off the program by telling the story of their business.

John Giles, a Butler High School graduate, founded the company in the 1990s after he discovered a niche in writing software for the hospitality industry.

Today, the firm employs about 50 people, and its software is in use across the world, from neighborhood pizza shops to top-ranked restaurants.

Alex Giocondo, also of Future POS, will lead a session on customer relationship management, which involves technology to organize, automate and synchronize sales, marketing, customer service and technical support.

Darren Fisher of the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue will present a workshop on identity theft.

Thomas Hillman of Verizon Wireless’ regional headquarters in Warrendale will showcase cutting-edge wireless technologies and how they can apply to businesses.

Joe Harford, founder and president of data security firm Reclamere, based in Tyrone, Blair County, will speak about how the growth of technology is impacting regulatory compliance for all businesses.

Robin Shoop, director of the Robotics Academy at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute, will wrap up by discussing ways to get youths excited about technology careers.
