Butler County has no health care navigators, people who help the public sign up for health care using the federal Health Insurance Marketplace, but that does not mean residents seeking insurance cannot get help.

To find navigators, computer users can go to www.healthcare.gov and click on “Find Local Help.” Users will be directed to enter their ZIP code and find the closest agencies offering help.

Using that search, no navigators in Butler County show up. However, there are several navigators in Pittsburgh, as well as some in Natrona Heights, Kittanning, New Kensington and Aliquippa.

The search displays contact information and directions to get to the navigators.

Additionally, the Pennsylvania Mental Health Consumers’ Association has navigators who assist people statewide.

In Butler County, people can send an e-mail to westernPAnav@mhawc.org to ask for an application or call 855-274-5626.

Lynn Keltz, executive director of the association, said many people have never dealt with health insurance before, so navigators can help those people and others deal with the insurance marketplace.

She said navigators help people apply online or over the phone.

Applications can happen at an association office, but Keltz said navigators can go to communities to help people who cannot travel.

The association’s eight navigators have been busy over the past few months, she said.

“We’ve had a great response,” Keltz said.

Also regarding insurance under the Affordable Care Act, at 1 p.m. Wednesday the Consumer Health Coalition will have an informational session at the Cranberry Public Library. After the session, enrollment assistance will be offered.

The federal Health Insurance Marketplace, which opened Oct. 1, was established by the Affordable Care Act.

The deadline for enrollment in 2014 is March 31.
