Floyd “Popeye” Peter Green
Floyd “Popeye” Peter Green, 87, of Butler passed away Thursday at Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born May 9, 1929, in Butler, he was a son of the late Martin Peter and Stella Waltman Green.
He worked as an engineer for United Telephone Co. where he retired following 37 years service.
He was a member of St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
In his younger years, he excelled at baseball. He played for St. Wendelin and the Butler County baseball leagues. He was avid at golf and tennis. He built a tennis court at home with his sons and his friends and enjoyed building a tennis empire. He and his friends enjoyed playing the left-handers against the right-handers.
He was a member of the Marine Corps League Bantam Marine Detachment 743, for which he served as commandant. He received the Marine Corps League Marine of the Year award in 2011, during which he served a year as commandant. He also received the Tenure Award for 20 years of uninterrupted service.
He was a volunteer for the VA Medical Center in Butler for 20 years.
Surviving are his seven children, Julie (Robert) Dandoy of Butler, Martin (Jerrilyn) Green of California, Michael (Florence) Green of Slippery Rock, Christopher (Noelle) Green of California, Kelly (Robert) Bower of Texas, Alisa Green of Butler and Douglas (Stephanie) Green of Butler; 25 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Jane (Jack) Kriess of Butler; numerous nieces and nephews; and his former wife, Evelyn Hilovsky Green.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia A. Polite Green, who died Jan. 11, 2005; six brothers; and one sister.
GREEN — Friends of Floyd “Popeye” Peter Green, who died Thursday, April 6, 2017, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon Monday at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, 127 Franklin St., Butler. The Rev. Harry R. Bielewicz, pastor, to officiate.
