Emergency responders will hold gas release, injury drill

The SAFER Group and other area emergency response organizations will train on how to respond to a potential emergency involving a “gas release and injury” from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday.

The group — which includes fire crews from Adams, Callery, Cranberry, Evans City and Harmony and the Cranberry EMS — will stage a mock emergency response at the Bluestone Gas Processing Plant in Forward Township.

While there is a response plan that has been implemented for such an incident, Harmony Fire District Chief Scott Garing said holding a drill has great value.

“You’re exercising something you don’t get to do very often,” Garing said.

The drills augment the departments’ action plans by helping their members see what the response includes, he said.

While the mock incident will be at the gas plant, the participants — which add mutual aid organizations and hazmat to the SAFER Group — also will stage outfitting from the Steamfitters Technology Center.

The emergency management agency that helps respond to incidents in Harmony and the surrounding areas also will participate, and a command post will be staged at the Harmony Fire District.

The planning for the drill required participation from not just the emergency teams, but also the plant’s operators, Garing said.

“It’s a collaborative effort to make sure we get something done,” he added.
