A tractor-trailer hauling sand rolled overon Route 68 in Oakland Township Monday afternoon. The driver reportedly suffered only minor injuries but the road was closed for about four hours.

OAKLAND TWP — The driver of a tractor-trailer that rolled over Monday night was left mostly unharmed, though emergency crews spent about four hours dealing with the aftermath of the crash.

At about 4:45 p.m. the 18-wheel truck driving east toward Chicora on Route 68 veered off the road as it went around a bend near the intersection with St. Joe Road, according to police.

The truck was hauling two large metal containers of sand, labeled “Prop X,” to a nearby natural gas drilling site on Seven Hills and Conway roads in the township.

The weight of the sand apparently caused the trailer to roll over, which in turn caused the cab to roll onto its roof on the grass in front of a house, driver Luke Varana of Clymer, Indiana County, said.

Varana, who drives for LB Trucking of Ebensburg, said the crash smashed the door into an open position and he was able to get out of the upside-down cab by himself.

He had some minor cuts to his side, but apparently was not seriously hurt.

“I'm good. I'm OK,” he said.

An ambulance responded to check him out, but he refused further treatment and stayed at the scene.

“God was on his side today,” Oneida Valley Assistant Fire Chief Paul Patten said.

The crash destroyed a mailbox and several branches on pine trees were broken and left resting or hanging on power lines. Some sand was spilled and the shoulder of the road was torn up by the truck, Patten said.

State police closed Route 68 at the intersection with St. Joe Road for more than an hour and sent vehicles on a detour while a tow-truck crew from John Malinski Towing worked on pulling the vehicle back onto its wheels and towing away both it and the two containers of sand.

A hazardous materials team also responded and spent about an hour to check on the leaking fuel. They placed absorbent booms around the truck to collect any additional spills as a tow truck crew pulled the rig back onto its wheels around 6:45 p.m. The sand was not treated as toxic.

Oneida Valley fire units cleared the scene and reopened the road at 8:52 p.m.

State police Monday said Varana would likely be cited with summary traffic violations including failure to stay in the lane of travel.

It was unknown if he was speeding.

Police were planning to check the truck for any other violations today before completing the investigation.

Varana did not have a history of traffic citations in Pennsylvania.

Neighbors said that tractor-trailers are frequently seen hauling sand on the road to the well pad. One such truck was pulled off to the side of the road Monday night waiting for Route 68 to reopen.
