Girl, 14, wins 2K race

Rylee Hurley, 14, finishes first in the women's division of the Butler Road Race 2K event Saturday morning. Hurley, an Oakland Township resident, entered the race with one goal: beating her father, Corey Hurley, who won the men's 2K 40-49 division.

Rylee Hurley concerned herself with finishing ahead of just one person in Saturday's 2K portion of the Butler Road Race.

She ended up besting a lot more.

The 14-year-old resident of Oakland Township was the top female in the event, thanks to a time of eight minutes, 33.19 seconds.

“I was just trying to beat my dad,” said Hurley, whose father, Corey Hurley, placed first in the men's 40-49 age division. He could not be reached for comment.

Rylee was in second place with about 50 meters remaining, but her strong finish overtook Mandy James, who finished less than a second behind.

“I saw her in front of me and wanted to catch her,” said Rylee, a student at Butler Intermediate High School who runs on the cross country and track teams. “This course is harder than it looks.”

Sophia Emmorey was third at 9:21.59.

Rylee Hurley said she stays fit by getting in runs on the roads near her home. She hopes to compete in a few 5K events this summer.

At the urging of a friend, Amos Ramsey, 19, decided to compete in the Men's 2K.“I've competed in 5Ks, 10Ks and half-marathons,” said Ramsey, a resident of New Galilee in Beaver County. “I'd never done a 2K, but my friend, Ben Dymond, said, 'Let's do one.'”Ramsey certainly didn't regret his decision to take part. He won the race with an effort of 6:13.14.Alex Depew was second at 7:22.74 and Aaron Stebick's 7:33.35 placed him third.Ramsey's time was not far off from Tim Flynn's record in the event, 6:04.5 set in 2018.“I really had no clue what kind of runners would be here,” Ramsey said. “I wanted to go sub-6 (minutes).“I run on a lot of back roads and trails. Winning here was fun, but slightly unexpected.”
