49ers expected to sign Fusco

Fusco

Seneca Valley High School and Slippery University graduate Brandon Fusco is reportedly signing with the San Francisco 49ers.

Released in February by the Minnesota Vikings after six seasons with the team, Fusco, 28, has been a free agent since.

“My understanding is they reached a verbal agreement and Brandon will probably sign a contract with the 49ers (today),” retired SRU coach George Mihalik said.

Fusco was in Slippery Rock for SRU's annual spring football game Friday night and the football program's golf outing Saturday.

He was reportedly flying to San Francisco Sunday and could not be reached for comment.

The 49ers have a new coach and general manager this season in Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch. They are coming off a 2-14 season.

Fusco visited the 49ers less than two weeks ago.

“Brandon was contacted by the team during the draft. They said they were looking to draft a guard, but would prefer to have him,” Mihalik said. “Brandon's agent and the team got together and I guess they came to an agreement.”

The 49ers had 10 draft picks over the weekend and did not select an offensive lineman.

Fusco visited the New England Patriots this past week, “but was told they have their starting offensive line set and Brandon wanted to go somewhere where he would get a chance to start,” Mihalik said.

Fusco suffered two concussions with the Vikings last season. He missed the final 13 games of the 2014 campaign because of a torn pectoral muscle.
