BHS touted for 2 heart procedures

Cardiac surgery team praised

A media organization that ranks companies in various industries such as medicine pointed to Butler Health System as a top hospital for two heart procedures.

In its rankings for fiscal 2019, U.S. News and World Report labeled BHS as “high performing” in both heart bypass surgery and aortic valve surgery, despite the company finding “worse than average” patient survival in heart bypass surgeries.

In a written statement issued this week, BHS President Ken DeFurio pointed to the hospital’s cardiac surgery team as the cause of honors.

“Our cardiac surgery team, led by Dr. Hazem El-Khatib and Dr. George Davliakos, has performed at the highest level for more than two decades,” DeFurio said in the written statement. “This recognition shows that BHS continues to be the very best as it enters its third decade of performing advanced cardiac surgery procedures.”

Jana Panther, BHS’s director of public relations, said both El-Khatib and Davliakos are long-serving members of the cardiac team.

U.S. News offers a scorecard online that serves as a rubric for each hospital. The scorecard breaks down how the overall “high performing” declaration is determined.

Under its aortic heart rating for BHS, the company lists BHS as average performing in terms of patients surviving the procedure, immediate patient discharges after the surgery, readmission prevention, infection prevention and patient experience.

The site lists BHS’s aortic heart performance as high only in terms of the number of patients served and in the prevention of prolonged hospitalizations. The site notes that BHS offers an intensive care unit and that it publicly reports data to the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

In heart bypass surgery, the company actually ranks BHS as “worse than average” for patient survival. It also notes low nurse staffing.

The company rates BHS as average for patient discharge, infection prevention and patient experience in heart bypass surgeries as well. BHS earns high marks for preventing prolonged hospitalizations, patient readmissions and volume of patients.

Butler Memorial Hospital has 296 beds, according to a news release from Panther. BHS has locations in Butler, Armstrong, Clarion, Indiana, Lawrence, Mercer and Venango counties.
