Speakers discuss Washington's trail
CRANBERRY TWP — Butler County will host the upcoming Washington’s Trail Symposium 2019.
The event, titled True Tales of the Trail, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Pittsburgh Marriott North in Cranberry Township. It will include presentations by Walt Powell, historian, author and president of the Braddock’s Road Preservation Association; Joe Stahlman, director of the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum in Salamanca, N.Y.; Eric Scuoteguazza, archaeologist and consultant to Native American tribes; Mary Jane McFadden, National Park Service; columnist Len Barcousky; Leon Briggs, Tonawanda Seneca; and Eric Wisbith, historical consultant.
Presentations include “Queen Alliquippa, Seneca Matriarch,” “Paths to Understanding George Washington,” “George Washington ‘Flopped’ Here,” “First Peoples of Pennsylvania Before the French-Indian War,” “Wampum Panel — the Peacemakers Message: Making War and Peace in the Ohio Country” and “Trails & Trade Routes.”
Washington’s Trail is a signed and self-guided driving route through 10 counties in Western Pennsylvania, extending from the Maryland/Pennsylvania border in the south to Fort LeBoeuf in Waterford, Pa., in the north. It commemorates young George Washington’s first military diplomatic mission in the fall and winter from 1753 to 1754.
The symposium is open to the public, and registration and payment are required by Oct. 7. The fee is $35 and includes access to all sessions, lunch and a door prize drawing. Visit www.washingtonstrail.org for tickets or call 724-234-4619 for more information.
