Connoquenessing Creek finished as runner-up in the voting for 2018 Pennsylvania River of the Year.

The Loyalsock Creek, which runs for 64 miles in northern-central Pennsylvania, was announced as River of the Year Monday by the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and Pennsylvania Organization for Waterways and Rivers.

In an online vote the Loyalsock got 6,100 votes, while the Connoquenessing Creek got 5,381. The Lackawanna River, Lower Susquehanna/Susquehanna Riverlands and the Little Juniata all got fewer than 2,000 votes.

Along with the honor comes a $10,000 leadership grant to fund River of the Year activities intended to promote the river or creek. Middle Susquehanna RIVERKEEPER Association will receive the grant.

The Connoquenessing Creek was nominated by the Allegheny Aquatic Alliance, a nonprofit organization that has been working to clean up the creek and improve access for boating in Butler, Beaver and Lawrence counties.
