SRU baseball defeated, 24-15

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Christian Porterfield had five hits — including a home run, double, two RBI and three runs scored — but Slippery Rock University’s baseball team couldn’t hold an eight-run lead Wednesday against No. 13 West Chester.

The Rock (6-4) dropped a 24-15 decision at Osceola Park.

SRU had an 11-3 lead after four innings, only to see the Golden Rams score 11 consecutive runs in the fifth and sixth innings for a 14-11 edge. A six-run eighth inning put away the win.

Joe Campagna and Mitchell Wood had four hits each for The Rock, which had 22 hits as a team. Tyler Walters had three hits, two RBI and scored two runs.

Since the beginning of the Sunshine State Games. Walters has improved his batting average from .214 to .353.

Butler graduate Wyatt Daugherty endured his first loss of the season, allowing three earned runs — nine total — in 1.1 innings pitched.

Jared Melone had three hits, a homer and six RBI to lead West Chester (9-2).

SRU takes on Mansfield at 2 p.m. Thursday at Osceola Park.

Softball

The Rock (11-6) picked up a pair of shutout wins Wednesday in Clermont, Fla., defeating Jefferson 9-0 and Bloomsburg 3-0. Brooke Dawson and Camie Shumaker tossed complete games in getting the victories.

Lauren Hawley had four hits and three RBI for the day while Becca Roesch had four RBI.

SRU plays Wayne State and Minnesota-Crookston Thursday.
