Lee D. Kummer

Lee D. Kummer, 81, of Forward Township, Evans City, passed away Saturday evening.

Born on April 23, 1933, on the family farm in Forward Township, he was the son of the late William and Ferne Christie Kummer.

After completing eight years at Dunbar School, he graduated from Evans City High School, all while helping with the family's door-to-door egg route on the North Side of Pittsburgh.

He earned a bachelor's degree in agronomy from Penn State University in 1955, where he also enjoyed playing intramural fast-pitch softball and was a member of the collegiate 4-H club.

Lee became the agricultural county agent in Crawford County after graduation. It was there that he developed his interest and love of dairy cattle. He also became interested in the Mercer County home economist, Rosalyn Sammons of Wattsburg, Erie County, who he married in 1960. Together they went to Purdue University where Lee received a master's degree in agronomy.

Delighted to return to the Kummer Farm in 1962, Lee loved being a farmer, especially growing his seven acres of sweet corn and raising his herd of Registered Lehearth Holstein cattle. He enjoyed relating to his customers and to the many young people who were employed at the farm over the years.

He was involved in many agricultural organizations, including the state and national Holstein associations, Atlantic Breeders/Genex Cooperative and Farm Credit, among others. He was instrumental in starting the Butler County 4-H Dairy Club, was involved with the Butler Farm Show and was an active Penn State alumnus nominated to the honorary Armsby Society.

Lee served 25 years on the Seneca Valley School Board and enjoyed singing tenor in the choirs at the Crestview and Old Union Presbyterian churches.

He is survived by his wife, Rosalyn; his son, Scott; his granddaughter, Lane Kaye; his grandson, Nolan Lee, and his daughter, Jean, all of Evans City; his sisters, Elaine (Robert) Woller of Latrobe and Linda (Alan) Geiger of West End, N.C., and several nieces and nephews.
