Valjean J. Champ

Valjean J. Champ, 75, of Butler passed away at 8:24 p.m. Thursday at UPMC St. Margaret in Pittsburgh.

She was born June 18, 1940, in Meyersdale, Pa., to the late Nathaniel O. Jeffreys Sr. and Elizabeth (Ries) Jeffreys.

Valjean was a longtime member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where she was an elder.

She was a third-grade teacher at Meridian Elementary School in the Butler School District for 30 years.

Valjean belonged to the National Education Association, Pennsylvania School Education Association, Pennsylvania School Education Retirement System, Order of Eastern Star and Butler Education Association.

Her main hobby was reading, but she enjoyed working with dogs along with planting flowers.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald A. Champ, who she married Nov. 28, 1964; one son, Warren Champ and his wife, Kim, of Washington, Pa.; two daughters, Bethany Champ and her fiance, Mike Graham, of Butler, and Tammy Boice and her husband, Dwight, of Butler; two grandsons, David Champ of Bessemer, Pa., and Jeffrey Champ of Washington, Pa.; one granddaughter, Brianne Yusko of Butler; and also by one brother, Nathaniel O. Jeffreys Jr. and his companion, Ann Hays, of Butler.

CHAMP — Friends Valjean J. Champ, who died Thursday, April 21, 2016, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler.Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Trinity Presbyterian Church, 107 Stanley Ave., Butler, with the Rev. Graham Standish, the Rev. Connie Frierson, the Rev. Tammy Wiens, affiliated with Trinity Presbyterian Church, and her grandson, David Champ, director of youth and family ministries at Westfield Presbyterian Church of New Castle, officiating.Burial will take place in the Butler County Memorial Park.In lieu of flowers, the family would request donations to be made to the Butler County Humane Society, 1015 Evans City Road, Renfrew, PA 16053 or to the American Lung Association, 810 River Ave., Suite 140, Pittsburgh, PA 15212.Online condolences can be given at www.thompson-miller.com.
