Zimmer helps Rock spikers

Mars graduate Jaden Zimmer helped the Slippery Rock University volleyball team to a pair of straight-set victories over Kutztown University and Cheyney University over the weekend.

Zimmer was dominant at the net against Kutztown with five blocks.

Leah Jones had 13 kills and 20 digs in the 25-20, 27-25, 25-22 win.

The Rock (10-2, 4-0) was even more impressive in a 25-17, 25-10, 25-9 win over Cheyney.

SRU had 39 kills to eight for Cheyney and also held the edge in assists (32-7), service aces (12-1) and digs (62-45).

BC3 at Montgomery Tournament — The Butler County Community College volleyball team went 2-2 in the Montgomery College Raptors Volleyball Tournament Saturday.

Butler High graduate Heather Straynick had 36 digs and 34 kills and Freeport grads Alexis Schecengost and Danika Durand also had strong performances.

Schrecengost had 26 kills and 24 digs and Durand added 68 assists and 25 digs for the Pioneers.

BC3 beat host Montgomery 22-25, 25-14, 15-11 and Lacawanna 25-15, 25-6.

The Pioneers, though, fell to Wake Tech 21-25, 20-25 and Sandhills 23-25, 18-25.

Straynick and Durand were both named to the all-tournament team.

The Pioneers (9-6) also played Frederick Community College Sunday and lost 12-25, 14-25, 25-17, 22-25.

Straynick had 14 digs and five kills, Schrecengost 17 digs and nine kills and Durand 24 assists in the loss.

Peter Boylan, Josh Allman and Dom Francis each scored goals to lead The Rock to a 3-1 win over California (Pa.) University.Steven Rerick stopped six shots in goal for SRU (3-2, 1-0).

Brittney Kuhns scored five minutes into overtime for Indiana (Pa.) University to dump The Rock, 1-0.Annabelle Hegeman had four saves for SRU (3-2-1, 2-2-1).

Kailee Krupski scored the lone goal for The Rock in a 2-1 home loss to Lindenwood University.SRU (3-3) has now lost three straight.
