A three-vehicle crash on Route 68 between Butler and Chicora on Friday morning sent one man to a Pittsburgh hospital via medical helicopter and closed the road for nearly 30 minutes.

Chief Gary Wulff with Oneida Valley Volunteer Fire Department said the crash occurred about 8 a.m. in the area of 864 Chicora Road, also known as Route 68 east.

The man transported to Pittsburgh was eastbound on Chicora Road driving a Jeep when he rear-ended a vehicle stopped for construction — tipping off a chain reaction crash involving two additional vehicles.

Wulff said a crew from PennDOT was doing road maintenance in the area and had limited traffic to one-lane with signs warning motorists traveling in both directions. The Jeep struck a Ford SUV that then hit a pickup.

The male driver of the Jeep was transported to Pittsburgh with head and chest injuries. Wulff said the Jeep's air bags did not deploy.

Wulff said the male driver of the Ford SUV was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital.

According to Wulff, a local nurse was driving the pickup and was following a fellow nurse in the vehicle in front of her. Both women immediately rendered aid to the victims in SUVs behind them until emergency personnel arrived on the scene.

About 10 volunteers from Oneida Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Butler Ambulance and East Butler Ambulance assisted at the scene, as well as a medical helicopter.

The road was closed as crews prepared a landing zone in the parking lot of St. Joseph Church. Chicora Road reopened to traffic and PennDOT crews resumed work shortly after 9 a.m.

State police were also on scene investigating the crash. No names were available.
