FORWARD TWP — State police arrested the motorist who crashed his car into a fire hydrant and gas line Wednesday on Mars Evans City Road near Marburger Farm Dairy.

The 10 a.m. crash dislodged the hydrant, sending water flooding into the road and slowing traffic to a crawl as emergency responders and gas company crews worked to repair the damage.

A state trooper on the scene arrested the 30-year-old man who drove the car under suspicion of driving under the influence. His name has not yet been released.

Police said charges are pending a blood test and that the cause of the crash is still “undetermined.” However, the trooper on the scene allegedly observed “indicators of impairment by controlled substances.”

The driver was traveling south on the road and crossed the oncoming lane before crashing into the hydrant and line on the east shoulder of the road.

Evans City Water and Sewer Authority warned nearby residents that the crash could lead to water discoloration, but that running the water a little longer would clear that up.
