After two water quality tests at Summit Elementary School in November, the Butler School Board will consider reopening the school after the Christmas break.

Superintendent Brian White Jr. sent parents a letter Friday explaining the proposed reopening and necessary changes to the school calendar.

“We’re now at the point where we can work on transition back into the school,” White said Friday, cautioning that the board must approve the reopening plan.

“I anticipate board approval,” Nina Teff, school board president, said Friday.

She said Monday night’s meeting will be the first for the newly elected board members and procedures for continued water testing will be discussed, but she believes the reopening plan will receive majority approval.

The schedule adjustments are needed to give Summit teachers enough time to pack up their class materials in Broad Street Elementary School in Butler, where they and their students have been since high levels of lead and copper were found in the water at Summit.

“We really think we need three days to move. Teachers need three days to move and unpack,” White said. ‘The teachers have been tremendous. Asking teachers to move a classroom is a lot of work.”
