Frigid temps force big decisions for local schools

5 P.M. UPDATE: the Butler, Seneca Valley, Moniteau and South Butler districts will be closed Friday.

Every school district in Butler County will likely close on Friday due to wind chill temperatures that could reach 20 degrees below zero.

The superintendents all lamented the recent cold blast, and said keeping students and staff safe is their highest priority in making decisions regarding whether to close or delay the start of the school days since returning from the Christmas break.

While none on Thursday afternoon had officially canceled classes and activities for Friday, they all leaned toward cancellation for safety reasons.

Brian White, superintendent of the Butler School District, had advice for his district's students and employees as well as everyone hunkering down for the Arctic chill predicted for Friday and Saturday.

“Stay warm,” he quipped.
