Woman scammed out of $1,300 through Facebook
WASHINGTON TWP — An elderly township woman was conned out of more than $1,300 in an apparent fake Facebook friend scam, authorities said.
The 78-year woman was contacted Friday morning by a message through Facebook Messenger that she believed to be from her friend “Patricia,” according to state police.
The message advised the victim that she could make $80,000 if she donated $1,325 to an organization. Police said “Patricia” gave the supposed name of someone in the organization.
That person, “Michael Lawerance,” subsequently contacted the victim and told her that before she could collect the $80,000, she would have to purchase store gift cards. He also apparently insisted that the victim make a quick decision.
She was promised her money would be delivered to her door Saturday.
The woman bought the gift cards, totaling $1,325, and sent them to the contact, police said, but never received any compensation.
“The victim advised she contacted the actual Patricia,” according to a police report, “who advised she never spoke with the victim.”
The woman later notified police, who continue to investigate the incident.
