Low-income residents have an extra week to get help with their heating bills.

The deadline to apply for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, known as LIHEAP, has been extended to April 13.

The program, scheduled to end Friday, was extended due to the continued cold weather.

LIHEAP provides cash grants directly to utility companies and crisis grants for households in immediate danger of being without heat.

The grants are based on household income, family size, type of heating fuel and region. The maximum income for a one-person household is $18,090 and increases to $61,980 for a household of eight.
