Small ensemble set to perform concert

Cello player Robin Hasenpflug will appear with eight other musicians for concert April 15 at Butler County Community College's Succop Theater.

BUTLER TWP — Cello player Robin Hasenpflug has performed as part of the Local Artists Mini-Series at Butler County Community College before, but her show April 15 will be a bit different.

This time she will appear with eight other musicians for the 2 p.m. show in the Succop Theater.

“Before asking these musicians to join me, I asked myself a question,” Hasenpflug said. “Who do I know in the Butler/Pittsburgh music scene that I have always wanted to work with?”

Performers will include Lydia Choorapuzha, violin 1; Jay Koziorynsky, violin 2; Stephen Weiss, viola; Gino Faraci, bass; Jason Allison, French horn; Sean Yancer, French horn; Amy Baker, bassoon; and Kira Bokalders, clarinet.

Hasenpflug said, “We have all shared the stage in orchestras such as the Butler Symphony, the Erie Philharmonic and the Wheeling Symphony, but who would I really like to play music that requires a smaller ensemble? Where one's skill, diplomacy and enthusiasm would be under more of a microscope.

“Based on what I already knew about their abilities in these departments, I could not wait to join forces with these eight musicians.”

The concert title “Music by the Numbers” refers to building the players two by two.

“We will feature a violin/cello duo, a string quartet, a horn sextet (string quartet with two French Horn players added) and finally an epic octet for winds and strings,” she said.

The program will include “Passacaglia for Violin and Cello” by Handel/Halvorsen, “Chysanthemums” string quartet by Giacomo Puccini, “Horn Sextet Op. 81b” by Beethoven, and “Octet for winds and strings D. 803” by Franz Schubert.

She said she has found the Succop has outstanding acoustics that are good smaller ensembles.

Tickets are $10. Call 724-284-8505 or visit www.bc3.edu.
