LOS ANGELES — No. 1 Southern California got another major scare Saturday night. But the electrifying Reggie Bush wouldn't let the Trojans lose.

Bush ran for a career-high 294 yards on 23 carries and scored twice, leading the Trojans to a wild 50-42 victory over No. 16 Fresno State and keeping their hopes alive for an unprecedented third straight national championship.

Bush also caught three passes for 68 yards and set a school record with 513 all-purpose yards, easily breaking the mark of 368 set by Anthony Davis against Notre Dame in 1972.

The win was the 33rd straight for USC (11-0, 7-0 Pac-10) and its 26th in a row at the Los Angeles Coliseum, where a crowd of 90,007 watched the 23-point underdog Bulldogs give the Trojans all they could handle.

Fresno State scored twice in a span of 12 seconds to take a 42-41 lead with 9:47 left. After Paul Pinegar's 6-yard touchdown pass to Joe Fernandez, Bush made perhaps his only mistake of the game, fumbling the ensuing kickoff. Jason Huss recovered, and Wendell Mathis ran 18 yards for a touchdown on the next play.

The Trojans then moved 89 yards to take a 47-42 lead, scoring on a 2-yard run by LenDale White. The big play of the drive was a 43-yard pass from Matt Leinart to Bush, putting the ball at the Fresno State 21.

Three plays later, Lawrence Jackson sacked Pinegar and forced a fumble, which Brian Cushing recovered at the Fresno State 15. That set up a 26-yard field goal by Mario Danelo with 3:06 to play.

The Bulldogs then moved to the USC 25 before Darnell Bing intercepted a pass by Pinegar at the goal line and returned it 40 yards. The Trojans then ran out the clock.

Leinart completed 22 of 33 passes for 200 yards and one touchdown. Pinegar was 27-of-45 for 317 yards and four TDs with four costly interceptions. Mathis gained 109 yards on 23 carries.

Antonio Pittman's 3-yard run with 24 seconds left capped an 88-yard drive and gave Ohio State a win over Michigan, clinching a share of the Big Ten title.Ohio State (9-2, 7-1) closed the regular season with six straight wins and gave coach Jim Tressel his fourth win in five games against Michigan (7-4, 5-3). The Buckeyes shared the conference title with Penn State, which beat them in October and will get the Big Ten's BCS bid.The Buckeyes rallied for the victory despite two turnovers and a shanked punt that led to scores, a missed extra point and field goal, mishandled punt returns and two pass interference penalties in the end zone.Michigan was essentially playing mistake-free football when it led 21-12 midway through the fourth quarter before Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith rallied his team to a victory.Smith's 26-yard pass to Santonio Holmes made it 21-19 with 6:40 to go.Michigan then drove to Ohio State's 34 and chose to have Garrett Rivas pooch punt, instead of kicking a long field goal into the wind.Smith started the winning drive at the Buckeyes 12 with 4:18 left and made a series of clutch plays, including a 26-yard pass to Anthony Gonzalez to Michigan's 4, to set up Pittman's TD.Michigan got to midfield, but its comeback hopes ended when receiver Tyler Ecker caught a short pass and tried to gain yards instead of running out of bounds.

Georgia Tech sacked Kyle Wright seven times, took advantage of key penalties on two touchdown drives and made a pair of late defensive stands to upset Miami and eliminate the Hurricanes from contention for a berth in the national championship game.The Yellow Jackets blitzed on virtually every play to stymie Wright. After throwing touchdown passes to five receivers a week ago against Wake Forest, he managed only one scoring pass and went 14-for-31 for 207 yards.KaMichael Hall sacked Wright twice and made a fourth-down stop to end a Miami threat midway through the fourth quarter. Wright moved the Hurricanes 62 yards to the Georgia Tech 27 with 1:46 left before he was intercepted by Dennis Davis, and the Yellow Jackets ran out the clock.The Hurricanes (8-2, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) lost for the first time since their season opener at Florida State.The Yellow Jackets (7-3, 5-3) bounced back from a loss a week ago to Virginia. They also shook off an NCAA decision this week to place the school on two years' probation for using 17 academically ineligible athletes in four sports, including 11 in football.

JaMarcus Russell threw two touchdown passes and LSU's defense smothered Mississippi to move one step closer to the SEC championship game.LSU (9-1, 6-1 Southeastern Conference) held Ole Miss to 7 yards rushing and gave the Rebels (3-7, 1-6) their worst loss in Oxford in 56 years.Now, only Arkansas stands between the Tigers and a trip to Atlanta. LSU can clinch its third title game berth in five seasons by beating the lowly Razorbacks next week.Joseph Addai and Justin Vincent each had 1-yard touchdown runs while Russell had a 3-yard scoring pass to Craig Davis and a 20-yard TD toss to Early Doucet in leading LSU to its eighth straight win since an overtime loss to Tennessee.Russell finished 13-of-22 passing for 142 yards, Addai had 70 yards on 14 carries, and Chris Jackson kicked a season-best 48-yard field goal for LSU.

Brady Quinn threw two touchdown passes and Leo Ferrine returned an interception for a touchdown, giving Notre Dame a victory over Syracuse.Darius Walker, who rushed for 123 yards on 26 carries, added a 3-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. The Irish struggled on offense, with Quinn not as sharp as he has been and receivers dropping catchable balls, but were still good enough to beat the Orange (1-9).Notre Dame (8-2) needs to beat Stanford next week to remain eligible for its first Bowl Championship Series berth since 2000. Students threw tortillas back and forth throughout the game in anticipation of a possible Fiesta Bowl invitation. Someone also threw an orange on the field after an Irish touchdown.Syracuse lost its eighth straight — its longest losing streak since losing its final game of 1972 and the first eight games of 1973 — and must beat No. 18 Louisville to avoid the first 10-loss season in school history.

Virginia Tech dominated archrival Virginia to keep alive its hopes of gaining a spot in the Bowl Championship Series.Two long weeks after getting beaten convincingly by No. 3 Miami, Cedric Humes ran for 113 yards and three touchdowns and Marcus Vick threw for two more scores as the Hokies beat Virginia for the sixth time in the last seven meetings.Virginia Tech (9-1, 6-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) also turned three Virginia turnovers into touchdowns and shut down Marques Hagans and the Cavaliers offense. The Hokies would need Miami to lose in order to reach the ACC title game. The conference champion gets an automatic spot in the BCS, though Virginia Tech would be strongly considered for an at-large spot if it finished with just one loss.The Cavaliers (6-4, 3-4), who had won two straight at home and 21 of their last 23, had 46 yards at halftime, and gained most of their yards after the outcome was sealed.

Freshman Jonathan Stewart had a pair of touchdowns, including a 97-yard kickoff return to open the second half, and Oregon dominated rival Oregon State in a foggy edition of the Civil War.Stewart also ran for a 1-yard touchdown in the first half as Oregon (10-1, 7-1) won its seventh straight game and kept hopes for an at-large BCS bowl invitation alive.It is just the second time in school history that the Ducks have won 10 regular-season games. They also won 10 in 2001 when they went to the Fiesta Bowl and finished 11-1 with Joey Harrington at quarterback.Oregon State (5-6, 3-5), which lost four of its last five, finishes the regular season without the six victories required for bowl eligibility.

Brandon Cox passed for two first-half touchdowns and Auburn sacked Brodie Croyle 11 times in a victory over Alabama, the Tigers' fourth consecutive win in this bitter rivalry.Auburn (9-2, 7-1 Southeastern Conference) clinched at least a share of the Western Division title for the fifth time in six seasons with their second straight win over a top-10 team. LSU would play for the SEC title with wins over Mississippi and Arkansas.With an anemic offense, Alabama (9-2, 6-2) continued a season-ending tumble with its second loss in a row after riding the nation's top scoring defense into national title contention earlier in the year.The Tigers sacked Croyle seven times for minus-51 yards in the first half and cashed in on three short touchdown drives in the opening 11 minutes en route to a 28-7 halftime lead. Alabama's offense couldn't muster even the hint of a comeback, allowing Auburn fans to gloat with chants of "Overrated!".

D.J. Shockley threw four touchdown passes, Danny Ware scored on a 52-yard run and Georgia wrapped up the SEC East with a rout of Kentucky.Georgia squandered a pair of chances to wrap up the division title, losing to Florida and Auburn for only the second two-game losing streak since Mark Richt took over as coach in 2001.But the Bulldogs (8-2, 6-2) rarely lose to Kentucky, winning their ninth straight in the lopsided series.Shockley, one of the seniors honored before Georgia's final home game of the season, completed 17-of-31 for 159 yards in less than three quarters. Bryan McClendon caught two of the TD passes.Even when the Wildcats (3-7, 2-5) held a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, no one at Sanford Stadium seemed too concerned.The Bulldogs will be appearing in the title game for the third time in four years. They meet the SEC West champion in Atlanta on Dec. 3 — with the winner likely getting a spot in the Sugar Bowl.

James Davis rushed for 145 yards and his 2-yard touchdown run lifted Clemson to its eighth victory in the last nine tries against South Carolina.Steve Spurrier had hoped to conclude a season of success — the Gamecocks broke long streaks of failure with wins over Tennessee and Florida this year — with South Carolina's first victory over Clemson (7-4) since 2001.Trailing 9-6 and facing first-and-35 after two penalties, Clemson quarterback Charlie Whitehurst completed consecutive passes of 9 yards to Davis, 14 yards to Chansi Stuckey and 28 yards to Curtis Baham to South Carolina's 27. Davis took over from there. He burst through for a 23-yard gain and, two plays later, bulled into the end zone for the game's only touchdown.South Carolina (7-4) had a final chance, driving to Clemson's 43 with three minutes left. Taurean Henderson scored on a 2-yard run as time expired to lift Texas Tech over Oklahoma (6-4, 5-2 Big 12), breaking the Sooners' five-game winning streak over the Red Raiders.Henderson took the handoff with 2 seconds remaining and went up the middle. As he was going down, he stretched out his arms and got the ball across the goal line. The play was reviewed but the touchdown call was upheld, giving Tech coach Mike Leach his first victory in six tries against former boss Bob Stoops. Leach was Oklahoma's offensive coordinator in 1999.Tech (9-2, 6-2 Big 12) trailed 21-17 when it got the ball at its own 35 with 1:33 remaining and no timeouts.Cody Hodges completed passes of 26 and 7 yards to Robert Johnson and an 18-yarder to Danny Amendola to help get the Red Raiders to the Oklahoma 5 with 13 seconds remaining.Moments later, Henderson went in for the winning score.

Jolonn Dunbar scored on a 94-yard fumble return and Ray Henderson took an interception 35 yards for a touchdown, leading Boston College past Maryland.Andre Callender had 121 yards rushing and a score for the Eagles, who never trailed in their regular-season finale. Both teams had four turnovers.Playing in its first year in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Boston College (8-3, 5-3) finished tied with Florida State atop the Atlantic Division. But the Seminoles will advance to the title game by virtue of their 28-17 win over the Eagles in September.Lance Ball ran for 135 yards and a touchdown for Maryland (5-5, 3-4), which still needs one win to become eligible to receive a bowl bid. The Terrapins, who conclude the regular season next week at North Carolina State, went 1-4 at home.

Darrell Hackney threw four touchdown passes, three to Reggie Lindsey, and Alabama-Birmingham snapped UTEP's nine-game home winning streak.The loss denied the Miners (8-2, 5-2 Conference USA) a chance to clinch the league's Western Division title.Hackney, the conference's top passer with 2,718 yards coming in, completed 11 of 17 passes for 184 yards.His biggest mistake was an interception that Quintin Demps returned 43 yards, setting up a 4-yard TD pass from Jordan Palmer to Aaron Givens to pull UTEP within 35-23 with 6:11 remaining.Corey White ran for 106 yards on 21 carries with a touchdown for UAB (5-5, 3-4) and Lindsey finished with seven catches for 146 yards.
