Grandparents, grandchildren get together for Kids Day

Sisters Jocelyn, 12, and Lorelai, 10, Quinet concentrate during a game of cornhole at the Cranberry Senior Center last week.

CRANBERRY TWP — Cody Nock curled his arm up as he hurled a white bean bag toward his bright yellow target.

When the bag landed in the hole, Cody, 10, gave a cheer.

“It was a good day,” said Cody's grandmother Joyce Fox, a Cranberry Township resident.

Fox's two grandchildren were among 18 children who learned how to play cornhole, a game where players take turns throwing bags of plastic resin at a raised platform with a hole in the far end, and played a game of bingo with their grandparents last Tuesday during Kids Day at the Cranberry Senior Center, 2525 Rochester Road.

“We were looking for something different,” said one of the Kids Day organizers Niva Johnston about the game of cornhole.

Last year, the children were taught line dancing, said Terrie Walker, the center's manager.

Now the third year the center has offered the fun-filled day, it saw the largest group of children, said Johnston.

Over the summer, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who would often accompany their grandparents to the center did not have entertainment or a place designated for them, she said.

“It gives them something to do,” she said. “They get to spend the day with them.”That is when Johnston along with the other organizers Shirley DeSimone and Leslie Whipple, set up the Kids Day. What started as lunch turned into a day of games, crafts and bingo.Gift bags stuffed with cracker packets and coupons were given to the children.Cranberry Township resident Renee Melodia brought her grandsons, Gus, 13, and Heath, 9, Wycherley.Melodia, who volunteers at the center, brought her grandchildren for the third time to the event.“We get to see the other people's grandchildren,” Melodia said. “It gives the kids time to get to know one another and play and have a good time.”
