Pirates annouce Gonzales signing
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed shortstop Nick Gonzales, their first-round amateur draft selection, the club announced Wednesday.
Gonzales, 21, hit .448 with 12 homers and 36 RBI in 16 games for New Mexico State this season. He led the NCAA in home runs and RBI.
Gonzales owned a nation-best on-base streak of 82 games at the time the 2020 season was suspended. He led the nation with a .432 batting average in 2019 and went on to be named MVP of the Cape Cod League that summer.
