CRANBERRY TWP — A township woman faces felony charges for allegedly administering a prescription drug to her 10-year-old son.

Danielle L. Powell, 27, was arraigned Tuesday by District Judge Lewis Stoughton on felony drug possession and endangering the welfare of children charges. She was released on her own recognizance.

According to a criminal complaint filed by township police, Powell allegedly administered an unknown dosage of trazodone to her son on the night of Nov. 28.

Trazodone is an antidepressant and is classified as a schedule IV narcotic. It is only available by prescription and pediatric use is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

She allegedly gave him the drug, which is a narcotic, to calm him down after he was fighting with his siblings.

Police received a tip through ChildLine, which led to the investigation. Four staff members at the boy’s school were interviewed and allegedly told police they noticed he was lethargic and unable to concentrate on Nov. 29.

In an interview with a worker from Butler County Children and Youth Services she allegedly admitted to giving him the drug more than once to help him sleep. The pills were recovered by police after executing a search warrant at their trailer Dec. 2.

Cody Vorderbrueggen, Powell’s boyfriend, was arrested in October by township police for allegedly slapping a 4-year-old child in the same residence.

Powell is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Dec. 16.
