JACKSON TWP. — Kristin Robinson has 10-year-old twins and an active family.

As she told township supervisors at Thursday night’s meeting, the Robinsons have been trying to take advantage of their summer free time on Tollgate School Road.

“We rode our bikes … to a local ice cream parlor,” Robinson said.

But it wasn’t a smooth trip. According to Robinson, her daughter was trying to ride safely on the road as a car was driving past.

“She can’t go straight because the road is crackling off,” Robinson said. “She ends up slipping and falling onto the road as the car was passing.”

Robinson said the experience “shook her up.” She asked if the township will be paving Tollgate to make it safer.

“This road is not safe for pedestrians,” Robinson said. “It’s not safe for cars.”

Some of the road is paved, but township manager Chris Rearick told Robinson there’s more to do.

“We’re looking at additional shoulder back up,” Rearick said. “Right now … the shoulders are breaking up.”

He anticipates construction to start next year, if not this fall. The road will be widened by up to two feet in some areas.

“We’re not encouraging use of the road for biking just yet in that area,” Rearick said.

Robinson wanted to know if the project would be postponed.

Rearick said the only cause for delay would be if other construction was being done along the road. He doesn’t foresee any major issues.

“The overlay of it and the final coating would not be until spring of next year,” Rearick said.
