Man arrested after cycle chase

Police say speed topped 120 mph

PENN TWP — A motorcyclist’s attempt to escape police topped 120 mph.

Officers ultimately called off the high-speed chase Sunday afternoon for safety reasons but the suspect’s getaway was short lived.

Police on Monday arrested Seth B. Jelic, 34, of Middlesex Township, who faces a dozen charges including driving a stolen motorcycle.

Penn Township Patrolman Steve Setnar was in an unmarked car about 4:20 p.m. when he spotted a speeding black 2009 Kawasaki at Renfrew and Three Degree roads,

A woman, who police did not identify, was riding on the back of the bike.

The officer put on his warning lights near Hicks Road and the suspect pulled over and stopped. Moments later, police said, he started the cycle and speed away.

The chase was on and continued for 8 to 10 miles, authorities said. Setnar followed the bike all the away along Hicks Road to Route 8.

Traveling on Route 8 south, the motorcycle was clocked at “well over 120 mph,” according to court documents.

Jelic eventually turned onto West Airport Road and led police to the Butler County Airport before turning around and going back onto Route 8 south.

Setnar said the suspect sped in and out of traffic while driving into neighboring Middlesex Township, where Middlesex Patrolman Brian Costanzo joined in the chase.

Costanzo maneuvered his police car in front of the cycle on Route 8 near Brownsdale Road, and tried to slow it down.

But Jelic turned right onto Brownsdale Road and sped up while headed west, police said. Police discontinued the chase due to the danger to other traffic.

Police suspect Jelic, in a bid to elude officers, turned into a long driveway at a home in the 200 block of Powell Road in Penn Township.

He allegedly convinced the homeowner that the cycle had overheated, and the homeowner allowed the defendant to park it there.

Jelic and his passenger eventually made other arrangements for rides home.

Setnar later found the cycle at the Powell Road home. A check of the vehicle identification number determined it had been reported stolen from Cranberry Township on Aug. 24, 2013, documents said.

The license plate also did not match the motorcycle.

Police eventually identified Jelic, and arrested him at his house.

He was arraigned on charges of receiving stolen property and fleeing or attempting to elude police, both felonies, and reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor.

Additionally, police cited Jelic for driving with a suspended license-DUI related, driving without insurance and without valid inspection, driving an unregistered vehicle and fraudulent use of a license plate.

Other tickets include driving at an unsafe speed, reckless driving and running a red light.

Jelic, who is free on his own recognizance, faces a preliminary hearing July 9 at District Judge Sue Haggerty’s office in Saxonburg.
