TV series could be filmed in Mars

Council to vote at next meeting

Picrow Streaming Inc. plans to use locations in Mars for filming for an upcoming Amazon IMDb TV series, “Sprung,” later in September.

“Sprung” is a comedy TV series from Greg Garcia, creator of “My Name is Earl.” It stars Garret Dillahunt, Illeana Douglas and Philip Garcia.

The series will follow Jack, played by Dillahunt, a recently released convicted criminal who decides to turn his life around and foil people, taking advantage of others during the coronavirus pandemic. The show was greenlit in April and will air on Amazon's free IMDb TV streaming service.

Location manager Larry Geyer sent an email to the Mars Borough Council, and the proposal was discussed at a borough meeting Monday night. The borough council deferred voting to approve the filming until its next meeting at the beginning of September.

Picrow Streaming Inc. plans to request street closures in downtown Mars on Sept. 16 and 17. The company is looking to use locations across downtown Mars, notably on Grand Avenue, Railroad Avenue, West School Street, Arch Street and North Garfield Avenue.“They're using three or four different towns in western PA, and we are one of them,” said Mayor Gregg Hartung. “They're shooting different things in different towns that they think will work for different scenes in the TV show.”“They said that if they were to use one of the buildings, they would take a day to set up, a day to film and a day to break it all down,” said councilman Brad Price. “Whatever they do, they make sure that they don't harm anything, and they bring it back to its original state.”

Mayor Hartung also gave an update on Mars New Year logistics. He and the rest of the Mars New Year committee are doing final walk-throughs of the area of downtown where booths and exhibits will be set up Aug. 27 and 28.“Different uses of Pittsburgh Street and Grand Avenue will be all talked about, so we're all on the same page,” Hartung said.Hartung confirmed that the NASA stations will be located on Pittsburgh Street, and that there will be four NASA tents with a variety of displays for the two days of the festival. Those tents will begin to be set up during the day Aug. 26.“We'll keep the street open, but there will be less and less parking through that day on Thursday,” Hartung said. There will be rolling closures that Friday morning, and the team will gradually shut things down in town as stations are set up. The stage will be put in place around noon.“We're trying to coordinate with everybody so that no one feels like we're not trying to include them to be there,” Hartung said.
