Gusting winds look likely to hit Butler County Monday night.

A low pressure system coming up from the southwest could bring winds as fast as 50 mph, according to Shannon Hefferan, a meteorologist for Pittsburgh's National Weather Service office. The region as a whole can expect 15 to 25 mph winds between 9 p.m. Monday and 7 a.m. Tuesday, with some gusts reaching higher speeds.

Light rain experienced Monday was expected to continue into the night through mid-day Tuesday.

Todd Meyers, a spokesman for West Penn Power, said their in-house meteorologist was reporting the same warnings as the NWS. Meyers said they had been tracking the weather system for days. They expect strong winds from about 10 p.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday.

“Crews are ready and on call for it,” Meyers said.

A combination of fairly wet ground and high wind speeds is likely to down some trees, Meyers said. Power lines may come down.

Residents should be on the lookout for downed power lines and should treat any that are found as live wires, he said.

If outages do occur and temperatures drop, Meyers said people should be sure not to bring heating equipment indoors that is meant to be used outside. Things like camp stoves and grills can cause fires or carbon monoxide poisoning. Generators should be operated with care, as unsafe practices are easy for the inexperienced to commit if in a hurry.

And no, Meyers said, the holiday won't prevent electric crews from being out in full force.
