Write-in votes figured large in numerous municipalities during the May 16 primary election, filling out empty races and turning some noncompetitive bids for election into contested affairs.

TownshipsADAMS TWP — The race for two six-year seats on the township’s board of supervisors is now contested, after Democrat Donald Aiken won a spot on November’s general election ballot with 21 write-in votes in the primary.Aiken will be part of a three-person race this fall, with Republicans Ronald Shamela and Edward Vogel — who won 360 and 299 votes, respectively, in May’s Republican primary — also on the ballot.CENTER TWP — Three people are vying for two six-year seats on the township’s board of supervisors, after Democrat Don Pringle received 21 write-in votes and earned a spot on November’s ballot.Pringle is in the mix with Phil Wulff and Ed Latuska, both Republicans who won 341 votes and 293 votes, respectively, in the primary election.CONNOQUENESSING TWP — An empty race for a six-year seat on the township’s board of supervisors will be filled by Terry Steinheiser, who won enough write-in votes in both the Democratic and Republican primaries to get his name on the ballot in November.Steinheiser got 100 write-in votes on the Republican ticket and 32 write-in votes on the Democratic ticket.FORWARD TWP — An empty race for a single six-year seat on the township’s board of supervisors will be filled by Melvin Musulin, who won enough write-in votes in both Democratic and Republican primaries to get his name on the ballot in November. Musulin won 25 write-in votes in the Democratic primary and 68 write-in votes on the Republican ticket.MUDDYCREEK TWP — An empty race for a single six-year seat on the township’s board of supervisors will be filled by Robert Jesteadt, who won 14 write-in votes in the Republican primary election on May 16.

BoroughsBRUIN — An empty race for four four-year seats on borough council will be filled by three write-in candidates, who each won enough votes in the Republican primary to secure a spot on the November ballot.Steve Emery received 11 votes, Wally Emery received 10 votes, and Eric Feicht received 20 votes.EAST BUTLER — An empty race for a four-year term as borough mayor will be filled by Shawn Nagy, who won enough write-in votes in both Democratic and Republican primaries to secure a spot on the November ballot.Nagy received 24 write-in votes in the Democratic primary and 22 write-in votes in the Republican primary.MARS — A write-in winner will fill an empty ballot position in the race for four four-year seats on borough council this November.Julia Schultheis, who received 18 write-in votes in the Republican primary, will fill the final spot on November’s ballot in the council race. Schultheis will join Republicans Mike Fleming, Robert Bost and Christine Clutter on the ballot.PROSPECT — A write-in winner in the Democratic primary election for four four-year seats on borough council has turned an uncontested November ballot into a five-way race.William Marciniak won 15 write-in votes in the Democratic primary, earning him a spot on the ballot this fall, when he will face Republicans Nicholas Vaccarello, Janice Boice, Robert Boice and Todd Wilson.VALENCIA — Empty races for a four-year term as borough mayor and a four-year seat on council will be filled by write-in winners who won enough votes in both Democratic and Republican primaries to earn a spot on the ballot in November.Krystal Schultz received 17 write-in votes in the Republican primary and 11 write-in votes in the Democratic primary for the mayoral seat.Shannon McKenna won 15 write-in votes in the Republican primary and 11 write-in votes in the Democratic primary for the council seat.

School DistrictsKARNS CITY — Write-in winners in both Democratic and Republican primaries, in the race for four four-year seats on Karns City School board, will fill out previously empty positions on November’s ballot.Richael Barger-Anderson and Anita Orozco both emerged as write-in winners in both parties’ primary elections. Barger-Anderson won 149 write-in votes in the Republican primary and 103 write-in votes in the Democratic primary. Orozco won 98 write-in votes in the Republican primary and 70 write-in votes in the Democratic primary.They will join Charles Johns and Jeffery Hogan, who were both cross-filed and appeared on the ballot in both primaries, on the ballot in November.
