Missing 3-year-old found safe

Armstrong County man jailed in custody case

State police in Kittanning confirmed Sunday afternoon that a boy from Karns City reported missing has been found and is “safe and sound.”

His father, Patrick Hile, 37, of 125 Armstrong Run Road, Perry Township, Armstrong County, was arrested for interfering with child custody and endangering the welfare of a child, both felonies of the third degree, according to Trooper Anthony Vaccaro.

Hile is in the Armstrong County Jail on $25,000 bail.

Hile's 3-year-old son was reported missing about 10 p.m. Friday from a camp in Perry Township. Following a tip, police found them in a house on Chicora Road, Butler County.

Vaccaro said Hile admitted to knowing he no longer had custody of his son when his other son, who is 8, did not get off the school bus Friday.

Children, Youth and Family Services and state police went to the area of Armstrong Run Road to take custody of the 3-year-old Friday. According to Vaccaro, Children, Youth and Family Services had a court order to remove the children after their mother, Heidi S. Hile, 39, was accused of manufacturing methamphetamines at the family's home.

Heidi Hile was arrested Aug. 25 during a traffic stop on Fairmont Road near Route 268 in Fairview Township. She was arraigned on felony charges of manufacturing and conspiracy to manufacture a controlled substance and misdemeanor charges of possession of phenylpropanolamine and possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. She also was cited for two traffic violations.

Heidi Hile is free on $15,000 bail. The investigation is continuing.

Patrick Hile had a separate brush with the law Wednesday when he was brought before Judge James Owen on simple assault charges. According to state police, Hile is accused of burning his 8-year-old son. The hearing was continued.

Before the agencies arrival Friday to find the 3-year-old, the boy's father was seen leaving into the woods, according to a police report that noted there is a camp in the area of Armstrong Run Road, Hillville Road and Seybertown Road.

The area is believed to be where Hile took his son because a friend of Hile's owns the camp area, Vaccaro said. Police searched the area but did not find them. An Amber Alert was not issued because police felt the boy was not in danger, Vaccaro said.
