A Butler man free on bail while awaiting trial in one felony drug case is accused of selling drugs in a second case.

But when Butler police recently nabbed Kenneth L. Johnson, 39, on an arrest warrant in the trafficking case, they found even more drugs.

He now faces three felony drug cases. And he’s back in the Butler County Prison on $150,000 bail.

City police arrested Johnson after a traffic stop about 10:15 p.m. Dec. 22 in the 200 block of Wagner Avenue. Police said they pulled over the suspect’s vehicle for an equipment violation.

Officers soon learned that Johnson was a wanted man. The Butler County Drug Task Force earlier that day had obtained a warrant for his arrest stemming from a drug trafficking investigation.

According to court documents, the defendant on Oct. 3 sold a task force informant crack cocaine for $100.

He is charged with delivery of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance.

After arresting Johnson on the warrant, Butler police searched his car and turned up a coffee mug that contained a plastic bag of suspected crack cocaine and 28 stamp bags of suspected heroin.

Police subsequently charged him separately with two counts each of possession with intent to deliver and possession of a controlled substance.

He also was cited for driving a vehicle with a burned out headlight.

Johnson was arraigned Dec. 23 on charges in the city police and task force cases. He remains in the county prison while awaiting his preliminary hearings set for 3 p.m. Tuesday in each case.

The defendant already is facing trial in Butler County Court on unrelated drug charges stemming from a February arrest in Butler Township.

On Feb. 17, township police were called for a report of drug dealing in the parking lot of a convenience store on Center Avenue. Police stopped Johnson in his car.

When the officer confronted the suspect, he started a disturbance that led from the parking lot to the store, according to court documents.

Back at the car, police noticed a suspicious plastic bag, tied in a double knot to the driver’s door handle. The suspect claimed it was trash.

An officer said he also smelled an “overwhelmingly strong odor of marijuana” coming from the car.

Police arrested Johnson for suspicion of drug possession. He was searched and found carrying a wad of more than $1,000 in currency.

The bag in the door, documents said, contained suspected crack cocaine. When police went to put Johnson in handcuffs, they found him holding a plastic bag with suspected powdered cocaine in it.

Inside the car’s center console, police seized a bag of suspected marijuana and a scale.

Johnson was arraigned Feb. 18 on charges of possession with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, possession of a small amount of marijuana and disorderly conduct.

Following that arraignment, Johnson was placed in the county prison. But he was released the same day, court records showed, after posting $50,000 bail.
