SRU win streak snapped at 12

ERIE — Slippery Rock University shot a season-worst 35 percent from the field Wednesday night in seeing its 12-game men’s basketball winning streak snapped at Gannon.

SRU (14-6, 11-2) slid a game behind Indiana (Pa.) for the PSAC West lead with an 82-74 loss at the Hammermill Center. The Rock has not won there since 2013.

Gannon (8-12, 6-7) shot better than 70 percent for most of the first half in building a 40-27 lead by intermission.

Slippery Rock led much of the first half before Gannon put together a 17-0 run.

Micah Till paced SRU with 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. John Warren II and Jared Armstrong scored 15 points each and Vinny Lasley added 10 points.

Nolen Gerald scored eight points and dished out seven assists. Daryl Porter led Gannon with 22 points.

Gannon 75, SRU (women) 69

The Rock (8-11, 6-7) erased a 14-point deficit to knot the game with 1:36 remaining, but Gannon (10-11, 6-7) came away with the victory at home.

The Golden Knights got a go-ahead layup from Ivana Twumasi and sank six straight free throws to secure the win. Chelsea Rourke led Gannon with 20 points while Nicole LaCava netted 19 and Sydney Mitchell contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Brooke Hinderliter led SRU with 17 points. Ciara Paterson added 15 and Karns City graduate LeeAnn Gibson had 10 points, three rebounds and two steals.

Morgan Henderson, the PSAC’s leading rebounder, led The Rock with eight boards.t

Both Rock teams play Saturday afternoon, hosting California (Pa.) at Morrow Field House.
