'Ghosts' event scares up funds

Annual comedy program set

Does laughter always seem to creep up on you? Do you spend the year's spookiest season cackling over a caldron or howling at the moon? Do you guffaw at the grotesque?

A Halloween-themed comedy show coming to Butler later this month promises both a night of laughs and support for a good cause. The second annual Ghosts and Giggles features highly touted comedians, and all the money raised is earmarked for the Butler AM Rotary's “Save the Playground” fund at Butler Memorial Park.

Last year's event was dreamed up by Rotarian Stu Surkosky, a chiropractor in Renfrew. He said he predicts this year's iteration will be frighteningly good.

“It is going to be hysterical,” Surkosky said.

Last year's event drew about 250 people, but this go around they're thinking more like 350. A notable addition hoped to further enhance the spooky atmosphere is a costume contest — individual winners will walk away with $100, while couple costume winners will split $100 prizes. Costumes, in general, are encouraged.

The slate of featured comedians was picked by David Kaye, a comic who runs a group known as Funny Fundraiser. He personally selects acts from a network of comedians for each show, he said. The act is being considered PG-13, so the filth-adverse comedy fans need not fear.

Headlining is Tom Anzalone, a musical comedian with an international career under his belt. His performance, Kaye said, relies heavily on crowd interaction and he performs both song parodies and original comedy songs.

Jamie Ward is a U.S. Army veteran out of Atlanta who has performed on both Sirius/XM radio and on military bases.

Kaye, a 30-year comedy veteran, is hosting the event.

“It really is a fun, social night out, and on top of that, it's a great excuse to relax and raise funds for the community,” Kaye said.

Money raised at the event goes to the Rotary's ongoing playground preservation and replacement projects. Sometime in the next year, the Rotary is planning to complete the third and final phase of work, which involves new mulch, new benches and the creation of a long-term fund to keep the playground well-kept for the future.

Aside from comedy and costumes, a 50/50 raffle, basket auctions and a buffet-style dinner are included.

Tickets are $45 in advance or $50 at the door. Large parties should consider reserving a table ahead of time for $25. They're first come, first served, and large parties won't be able to reserve them on the day of the event.

Alcohol won't be served, but the event is BYOB.

The event is Oct. 26. Doors open at 6 p.m., dinner is at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.

The venue is the Vagabond Center in Lyndora.

Tickets are on sale online at butleramrotary.com or in person at May's Music Shoppe, Alliance for Nonprofit Resources or Care Chiropractic CTR.
