BUTLER TWP — Butler Township Police Chief John Hays says the department continues to investigate an incident in which two Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School students were sickened and taken to the hospital.

On Monday Kurt Speicher, executive director of the vo-tech school, confirmed in a statement that two students at the school were taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for evaluation after eating cookies brought in by another student. Speicher’s statement did not give any specific information about the students who were sickened, or when the incident occurred. But he said that authorities assured the school that it wasn’t due to illegal drugs.

“The Butler Township Police have informed the school that there is no indication from the test results that the cookies contained any illegal or prohibited substances” Speicher’s statement reads, in part.

Hays confirmed that, and said the department will conduct interviews on Tuesday in an attempt to figure out how the cookies — which Hays said resembled cookie dough or unformed no-bake cookies — made their way into the school. Hays said that depending on the results of the department’s investigation, the remaining cookies could be sent to a laboratory for further testing.
