Pink, orange and red fiery-colored feathers sprang from Lucas Morris' wild hair.
The 2-year-old trick or treated as the wild drummer Animal from “The Muppet Show.”
“He likes grandmas and grandpas and talking to them, so I figured this would be a good place to come for him,” said his mother, Stephanie Steele-Morris of Butler.
Trick-Or-Treat Night at Newhaven Court at Clearview in Butler drew about 200 children and their families Tuesday evening to the senior living facility ahead of Halloween night to get a jump-start on their candy collecting.
“This is a really special night for our residents,” said Gary Renwick, executive director. “They really enjoy and look forward to this all year — seeing the trick or treaters.”
Each superhero, clown, skeleton and witch gave their best “trick or treat” in exchange for chocolates and other assorted sweets.
“I like the fact he is going to talk to adults rather than going house to house,” Steele-Morris said about the facility.Amanda Jackson of Butler brought her two children — Matthew, 8, and Adalynn, 3 — to trick or treat at the place she used to work.As Adalynn perused through her candy bucket, Jackson said the night gives residents a chance to interact with children as they hand out candy. The Halloween spirit even infected the community dog, Graham, who was dressed as a hot dog.Halloween week began with a pumpkin decorating contest among the facility staff that was judged by the residents, said Kathy Roudybush, lifestyles director at Newhaven Court at Clearview. Each senior had the opportunity to participate because Sam's Club donated candy, she said.
For the residents, the event gives them a chance to remember their own children as they grew up and recall their own Halloween memories, she said.About 100 residents gathered inside the facility to pass out the treats.Adele Benek, a 92-year-old resident, passed out candy for the first time and admired the creativity of each costume.“The children are sweethearts,” Benek said with a smile, adding how children are her favorite part of Halloween. “They are so good because they're getting candy. It's great to have them.”
