Man arrested five times in two days for public intoxication
Butler police arrested a homeless man five times in two days for public intoxication. The fifth time, on Saturday evening, landed 49-year-old Scott D. Walter in the Butler County Prison.
City officers first found Walter passed out next to a Dumpster in the area of Jackson and New Castle streets following a call about 7 p.m. Thursday. He was placed in a holding cell at the police station until he was sober.
At 9 a.m. Friday, police got a call for a man passed out in front of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church on West Jefferson Street. Officers got there and recognized Walter, who was on the sidewalk.
He asked to be taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital, police said.
Officers came upon the Walter again about 5:40 p.m. Friday after they got a call for a man passed out on a bench on the 300 block of First Street. Police took him to the station where he was held and released after he sobered up.
The fourth call, about 12:25 p.m. Saturday, led police to Walter one more time. This time, they said, the call was for a man passed out on a bench at the Butler Area Public Library on South McKean Street.
Police said an ambulance subsequently took him to Butler Memorial Hospital.
About 7:10 p.m. Saturday, police found Walter on a stoop at a home on the 200 block of West Cunningham Street, where they were called for a report of a man passed out there.
On each occasion they found Walter, police noted, he “admitted to consuming Listerine (mouthwash) to the point that he was impaired.”
After the fifth call, police said they decided to take the defendant to the county prison because he had become a public nuisance and they feared for his safety.
District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned him on a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct and a summary charge of public drunkenness. He remains in prison on $2,000 bond.
