Bail set for man who allegedly spit at officer

SLIPPERY ROCK — Despite a change in the charges, bail was set for a man accused of spitting in the face of an arresting officer.

Dominic A. Parenti, 33, of Harrisville, was arrested June 21 after he allegedly threatened his mother with a shotgun and spit in an officer's face during the arrest.

Parenti waived his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday before District Judge William O'Donnell after two other developments.

First, Assistant District Attorney David Beichner changed one felony count to another. The charge of felony aggravated assault on a police officer took the place of the felony charge of assault by a prisoner.

All other charges remain the same, including misdemeanors of simple assault, terroristic threats, resisting arrest and drug and paraphernalia possession.

Despite the changes, Parenti's public defender Ryan Helsel asked the judge to establish a bond for his client, who has remained in Butler County Prison without it since his arrest.

“He's been in jail for two months, your honor,” Helsel said, asking for a $25,000 bond.

O'Donnell noted Parenti was given no bond until a mental health evaluation has been completed. Parenti said he had completed the evaluation.

Beichner agreed with a bond being set, but he asked O'Donnell for a higher amount: $50,000.

“These are serious charges,” he said.

O'Donnell set the bond at $50,000 and maintained the conditions that Parenti is not allowed to contact his mother or return to his home.

Parenti will appear next for a formal arraignment Oct. 12 in the Butler County Court of Common Pleas.
