Butler County slips in cost of living list
Butler County has received its fair share of accolades when it comes to “Best of” lists for counties in Pennsylvania.
It is ranked as the fourth-best Pennsylvania county in which to buy a house; the ninth-best for families; the 10th healthiest county in the state; and the 11th-best county in Pennsylvania to live.
It is simultaneously good for millennials (ranked 17 out of 65); and retirees (28th in the state).
But there’s one thing Butler County is not, according to the website Niche.com, which compiles ranked lists for counties on a variety of topics — and that’s among the state’s most affordable places to live.
A list of the 27 Pennsylvania counties with the lowest cost of living, released Tuesday, includes many of Butler County’s neighbors: Westmoreland County (27th), Crawford County (24th), Mercer County (21st), Lawrence County (20th), Armstrong County (15th), Clarion County (14th), and Venango County (3rd).
But Butler County, with a median home value of $183,200 and a median monthly rent cost of $771, according to the Niche.com analysis, isn’t on the list. Homeownership in the county is high, with 77 percent of residents owning their homes compared to 23 percent who rent, according to federal data. Median household income for the county is $63,345, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released late last month — handily outpacing the national average of $55,322.
The affordability rankings give equal weight to factors like property tax rates, home values, rent costs and ratios like housing cost compared to monthly income, which were provided by the U.S. Census Bureau. Also factored in are consumer price indexes for gas and grocery costs, which were provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
