A 48-year-old Polk man arrested last week in connection with the suspicious death of an unidentified woman, whose decomposed body was found July 25 in his home, remains in the custody of Missouri authorities.

Clayton J. Hindman turned himself in to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office in Ava, Mo., last week — just two days after state police in Venango County discovered a dead woman with a gun in her hand at the home he rents in Polk.

The gun's safety mechanism was engaged and her jawbone was broken in three places, according to a police report.

Troopers suspect the woman is Salina Poppy Chilson, a 38-year-old Parker resident reported missing on July 3. State police are awaiting a DNA analysis to confirm the identity, according to Venango County Coroner Christina Rugh.

A spokeswoman with the sheriff's office in Missouri said the department issued a fugitive from out of state warrant for Hindman on Thursday, allowing them to hold the suspect without bail as he awaits extradition to Pennsylvania. She said the process is ongoing, adding there is no scheduled date for Hindman's return to Pennsylvania.

Police have yet to confirm the identity of the remains found in the Polk home or a cause of death. The cause of the woman's fractured lower jawbone also remains unknown.

The woman's remains will be inspected by Dennis Dirkmaat, a forensic anthropologist at Mercyhurst College in Erie. Dirkmaat had expected the remains to have arrived at some point Friday. “It will take a few weeks to find in the bones what caused the fractures,” he said. “We're going to focus on what the bones tell us, what if any trauma there is and how it was created, and whatever else we can get out of it.”
