BUTLER TWP — A township man faces charges after police say he suffered an apparent overdose while caring for two children at the family's home last month.

Butler Township police on Monday charged Donald J. Campbell, 34, with misdemeanor counts of child endangerment and reckless endangerment.

Authorities were called to his Dutchtown Road home about 10:10 p.m. March 23, for a report of an unconscious man. The caller was Campbell's 9-year-old son, police said, who advised that the defendant was not breathing.

Officers got there and found the boy along with Campbell's 7-year-old son. Police found the defendant lying on his bed and unresponsive, according to court documents. He appeared to have trouble breathing.

Police said they noticed two metal spoons and two uncapped syringes at the foot of the bed.

An officer administered a sternum rub, a first-aid technique used to assess the consciousness level of an unresponsive person. The defendant awakened as another officer was preparing to administer the opioid antidote Narcan, which was not needed.

Campbell admitted using “a couple bags (of heroin)” before police arrived, documents said.

Police said they seized 22 stamp bags and 51 empty bags of suspected heroin, five uncapped syringes and two spoons.

“It is to be noted,” according to a police affidavit, “that the narcotics and drug paraphernalia recovered (were) in plain view and easily accessible by both juveniles.”

A Butler Ambulance Service crew subsequently evaluated Campbell, police said, but he refused further medical treatment.

The Butler County Children and Youth Services agency was notified and the children were released to other family members.

Police said that no drug possession charges were filed in the case because of the state's Good Samaritan Act, which provides immunity for people who report or experience overdoses.
