SLIPPERY ROCK — A Slippery Rock University student is accused of breaking into a number of vehicles at campus parking lots.

SRU Police on Sunday charged Ryan S. Provins, 20, of McKeesport, Allegheny County, with taking a total of $350.45 in property from seven vehicles between Sept. 1 and Oct. 18.

Police used outdoor security cameras to identify Provins as the alleged thief, according to court documents. Among the property taken from the vehicles was more than $150 in currency, headphones, a speaker, a backpack and a survival knife.

When police confronted Provins on Oct. 18, documents said, he had a digital scale and a marijuana pipe and grinder.

He allegedly admitted to the vehicle break-ins. He claimed he was “having a hard time self-medicating with marijuana and trying to pay fines,” according to a police affidavit.

Because he needed money, the affidavit said, he “resorted to stealing from unlocked vehicles.”

He also acknowledged “stealing from so many cars he cannot remember them all.”

Police said they recovered some of the stolen property, worth about $102.

An SRU spokesman said Provins is a sophomore at the university.
