Man sentenced for deadly drug delivery
A New Castle man was sentenced to jail Thursday for his role in providing a drug cocktail that killed a young Butler mother in 2018.
Police charged Anthony David Michael, 27, for a felony drug delivery resulting in death after Holley Haugh was found dead on July 27, 2018, at a man's apartment on the 400 block of West New Castle Street. The tenant called 911 to report finding her in a bed dead of a possible overdose. Her cause of death was subsequently determined to be “combined drug toxicity of morphine, fentanyl, sertraline and diphenhydramine.” Sertraline is the generic name of the antidepressant Zoloft and diphenhydramine is an over-the-counter antihistamine.
As part of the plea deal, the felony charge was dropped, and Michael pleaded guilty instead to a misdemeanor manslaughter charge and a felony possession with intent to deliver. Judge William Shaffer sentenced him to a total of 422 days to two years in jail, and he was immediately paroled after receiving 422 days of credit for time already served.
Assistant District Attorney Mark Lope, prosecuting the case, said the victim's family was pleased with the punishment, and he noted that this was Michael's first and only offense.
Haugh was the mother of a 1-year-old son at the time of her death. She also was engaged to be married and was pursuing an emergency services degree at Butler County Community College.
“It's just a tragedy all around,” Lope said.
