Hayes makes dynamic debut

PITTSBURGH — Ke'Bryan Hayes, one of the top prospects in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, made his major league debut a dynamic one Tuesday night at PNC Park.

Hayes, 23, a third baseman, delivered a double and RBI during a four-run sixth inning against the Chicago Cubs. The rally pulled the Pirates within 6-5 on the scoreboard.

The Cubs still held that 6-5 lead in the bottom of the eighth when the game was delayed by rain. Hayes was at the plate at the time play was stopped.

The rain delay lasted an hour and 11 minutes.

When play resumed, Hayes drilled his first major league home run — over the center field wall — leading off the eighth to tie the game.

The game did not end before presstime.

Chad Kuhl was the Pirates' starting pitcher, but worked only four innings. He surrendered a leadoff home run to Ian Happ in the first inning and a three-run shot to Kyle Schwarber later in the game.

Chicago starter Jon Lester was cruising with a 6-1 lead until the Pirates got to him in the sixth. Lester worked 5.1 innings and allowed eight hits.

Colin Moran had a pair of hits and scored two runs for the Pirates.

The Cubs (20-14) entered the game leading the National League Central Division. The Pirates (10-22) began the night with the worst record in baseball.

The teams resume their three-game series Wednesday night. Derek Holland (1-2) will start for Pittsburgh.
