After successfully completing Drug Treatment Court, a Butler man convicted of stealing copper and tampering with a police surveillance camera was sentenced Tuesday to probation.

Christopher J. Hrach, 32, was sentenced to 3 years of county probation by Judge William Shaffer in Butler County Court.

Hrach pleaded guilty Oct. 6, 2016, to misdemeanor possession of an instrument of crime and two counts of theft in two cases.

If Hrach had been unsuccessful in the Drug Treatment Program, that plea would have changed to two felony counts of trespass, with a sentence of 3 to 6 years in state prison, according to court records.

He was also ordered to pay court costs and $129.99 in restitution.

Shaffer also ordered that if costs and restitution are paid, supervision can be terminated after two years.

The Drug Treatment Court is a program of comprehensive treatment, education, offender accountability and intensive court supervision.

Hrach thanked the court saying, “I appreciate everything,” and adding that his life is “going very well.”

He was initially charged with felony criminal trespass, burglary, receiving stolen property, possessing an instrument of crime, theft, tampering with evidence, summary criminal mischief and traffic violations after an incident on June 16, 2016.

Adams Township police said Hrach was pulled over after an officer saw him going more than 80 mph on Route 228, according to the criminal complaint

Hrach allegedly had copper pipes and wire in the bed of his pickup truck, which he claimed he had collected over time.

A search of his vehicle revealed that he was in possession of a trail camera belonging to the township police, according to the complaint. Two cameras had been placed on the Simakas Co. property on Route 228 after scrap metal had been stolen off the property a week earlier.

Officers loaded video footage off both the stolen camera and one still in place on Simakas' property. The footage showed Hrach trespassing and tampering with the police department's camera.

Lancaster Township police then charged Hrach with three counts of felony criminal trespass, misdemeanor receiving stolen property, and four counts of theft.

Police said after a call from Adams Township police regarding Hrach's arrest, it was found that he had stolen wire from a location in the 400 block of Perry Highway on June 16, 2016.

Hrach has multiple previous convictions on theft, trespassing and drug charges.

In 2013, he was arrested in Adams and charged with stealing more than $7,000 in scrap metal during a seven-month crime spree. He later pleaded guilty to four counts of felony trespassing and received 9 months' probation.

He was arrested in May 2014 in Cranberry Township and charged with burglary. He later pleaded guilty to burglary and conspiracy charges and was sentenced to a minimum of 11 months in prison.
