Police pursuit ends with crashed cruiser

Teen driver faces many charges

BUTLER TWP — A Butler teenager is charged with aggravated assault after leading police on a chase into the city Wednesday afternoon that ended when a cruiser hit his vehicle.

Chad Robert Ashcraft, 18, also was charged with fleeing and eluding police, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving, careless driving and numerous other charges including an inspection violation, running stop signs, speeding, driving on roads laned for traffic and duty of driver on approach of an emergency vehicle.

According to township police, a patrolman around 1 p.m. attempted to stop Ashcraft’s vehicle on Hansen Avenue for an inspection violation.

Ashcraft allegedly fled, leading police on a pursuit that involved Butler police, Butler state police and Butler County sheriff’s deputies.

Township Police Chief John Hays said a stop stick, a spiked strip used to deflate tires, was used, but only the tires on the right side of Ashcraft’s vehicle were flattened.

Hays said during pursuit, Ashcraft struck one cruiser and nearly hit officers who were deploying the stop stick.

Police report Ashcraft’s vehicle was headed to the main section of New Castle Street from a looped portion around a small traffic island when the city cruiser that was hit earlier struck it, ending the pursuit at 1:07 p.m.

“Basically, he did an intervention,” Hays said about the officer purposely hitting Ashcroft’s vehicle.

Hays said charges are pending against the passenger in Ashcraft’s vehicle.

Ashcraft is jailed in Butler County Prison on $25,000 bail.
